Ashiatsu vs. Deep Tissue
Ashiatsu, pronounced ash ee aat su comes from the Japanese language meaning foot pressure. Ashi or sometimes better known as Barefoot massage is a style of massage in which the practitioner uses their feet to perform the massage. While this technique has ancient origins, it has been modernized to be done in a safe and therapeutic manor.
This style of deep tissue massage is an excellent option for those who love deep pressure without the discomfort. The foot is broader and has more cushion than a bony elbow or pointy fingers. Due to the fact that this is a weight bearing massage, the therapist is able to use their gravity and body mechanics to work deeper. Using overhead bars and a strap helps to work from different angles. Barefoot massage can be used for a full body massage except places that would be inappropriate to use feet, such as the face. Barefoot is an excellent modality for back pain, hamstring issues and shoulder pain to name a few.
FAQS.
What if I don't want Barefoot massage or I need light touch?
Barefoot massage is not going to be a good fit for everyone and that's ok.
Some conditions are contraindicated (medically unsafe). You must complete an intake form before your first appointment. Please fill this out honestly and completely. This allows your therapist to make any modifications necessary and determine if Barefoot is a safe option for you or to refer you to hands on therapist.
Can you still do Deep Tissue with your hands or elbows?
Nope, not with me. I specialize in Barefoot Massage for Deep tissue clients. I do offer hands on for lymphatic work (which is very light touch) or other places feet would be inappropriate like the face.
Are your feet clean?
Yes! My feet simply replace my hands. I clean and sanitize my feet before and after every session just as I would my hands.
Does it hurt?
Massage should NEVER be painful! We are working with your nervous system not against it. Massage should be a comfortable discomfort but never painful. If it is painful speak up!
